How To Protect Against Fraud
Fraud has become a major issue in Australia. You need to safeguard against fraud by both, customers and your own staff.
The following tips have been split into three categories and will help guard against possible fraud.
When in doubt, check it out.

Transactions where the Card is Present
Listed below are a few tips to assist in protecting your business from fraud.
- Be wary of a customer who
- Appears nervous or in a hurry when making a purchase
- Makes indiscriminate purchases without regard to size, quality or price
- Hurries in to complete the sale at closing time
- Indulges in distraction tactics
- Wants immediate access to goods
- Refuses free delivery for large items
- Requests transactions be manually entered
- Has no identification
- Makes purchases, then returns to make more purchases
- When you take the card, check to see that
- The card is not damaged
- Has a valid expiry date
- The embossing has not been altered
- The hologram does not appear suspicious
- The customer's signature matches the card
- When processing a transaction through an EFTPOS terminal, always check that the card number on the receipt matches the number embossed on the card
- Never process transactions through your terminal on behalf of another business
- If you elect to key enter a transaction (we recommend you do not), be aware that you are exposing yourself to chargeback potential. If the card is present it should always be swiped through the terminal as evidence that the card existed. If you did take this action, one possibility that may assist you would be to take a manual imprint of the card using the imprinter in your fallback kit.
- Ensure your terminal is kept secure overnight
- Be aware of who has access to your terminal and certify what level of access they need
- Keep secure at all times the password required to process settlement and refunds
- Change your confidential EFTPOS terminal password or PIN regularly
- Do not let anyone service or remove the terminal without first sighting proper identification
- If you take a manual imprint of the card, make sure the black carbon sheet is destroyed

Transactions where the Card is Not Present
Be especially cautious regarding mail, telephone and internet orders, that is transactions when the cardholder is not present. These transactions are more fraud prone and may result in a chargeback. As a merchant, you can be held liable for fraudulent transactions.
Remember, an authorisation is not a guarantee of payment. Authorisation confirms the availability of credit. It does not prove that the cardholder is entitled to use the credit card or prove the identity of the cardholder. An authorisation may be obtained on a card or card number that has been stolen or fraudulently used.
Ensure that staff:
- Obtain as many details on the purchaser as possible. This may include copies or faxes of the actual card, driver's license, home address or phone number
- Confirm an order with the customer by calling them on any daytime phone number given and beware of any difficulty in locating them
- Are especially cautious if a customer suddenly decides to collect the goods
- Do not release the goods to a third party such as taxi driver or messenger
- Do not fulfill requests for goods you normally don't trade in
- Are cautious when the delivery is overseas especially to places such as Nigeria, Malaysia, Indonesia, Eastern Europe
- Are cautious of large orders from new customers, especially when delivery is overseas.

General Fraud Tips
- Check the card number against any warning notices you may have received
- Do not split sales over different cards
- Be aware of who you are employing. Always obtain copies of identification documents when employing new staff.
- Keep detailed and up to date records of staff names, addresses, contact numbers etc.
